Hi, I’m Susan Douglass and this is my 9th year teaching Spanish at Cleveland High School.
Prior to Cleveland I taught at Sellwood Middle School for 12 years. While at Sellwood I started an annual summer home stay program to Costa Rica that I ran for 10 years. I chaperoned that trip 5 times and also chaperoned a high school IB program through IES to Costa Rica 4 years ago. So I have a lot of experience leading middle and high school age students overseas.
Before teaching I coordinated college study abroad programs to France, Austria, Spain, and Italy. I've lived in Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Italy. As you can probably tell, I love international travel and strongly believe that exposure to other cultures is so important. I was an exchange student my senior year in high school and again in Spain during college and am a strong advocate for student travel.
I have 2 daughters, my oldest daughter studies Spanish and is a junior at Cleveland and my youngest, who has been in the Mandarin immersion program since kindergarten, is a 7th grader at Hosford Middle School. Both girls also love to travel and explore the world. Last summer we spent a month in China, it was amazing!!
I am so excited to lead a group to Mexico this summer. Mexico is an incredible place to live and travel. It's a fascinating blend of ancient and modern and the people are so warm and welcoming. This will be such an incredible experience for high school students at such an important stage in their lives. Especially now with the overwhelming need for cross cultural understanding.
