Freiburg’s location at the foot of the Black Forest with Switzerland and France nearby makes it an ideal starting point for excursions throughout Europe. The city is also known for its sunny weather and its dedication to environmental conservation and clean technology.
The Language Institute Founded in 1972, the language institute has been specializing in teaching German to international and immigrant students as well as training teachers of German as a foreign language for more than a quarter century. It occupies a neoclassical three-story building in the city center, just minutes from the pedestrian area and the university campus.
The Classes Classes are split in two parts: in the first one, you will learn and practice new grammatical structures in a communicative context. The second one emphasizes your speaking and listening skills. Your fluency will improve through discussions, role plays, and classroom presentations. With a maximum of 10-12 students per group, you will have plenty of opportunities to interact and participate. The minimum course length during the winter, spring and fall is 6 weeks; during the summer it is 4 weeks. Classes with a focus on tourism and a theater course are also available.
Cultural Activities This Gap program includes a wide variety of social and cultural activities. The language institute organizes excursions to the famous Black Forest, sites of historic interest, and across the border to Colmar, Basle, and Strasbourg. Free screenings of current German films and evenings at local pubs will give you more chances to get to know the culture and the people. Additional options include everything from vegetarian cooking to cartoon drawing, and from political discussions to Euro Swing dancing. You will want to budget a little extra for transportation cost and entrance fees.
Special Option: Volunteer Internships in Hamburg If you would like to get involved with a non-profit organization or gain work experience in a small company, you can apply for a volunteer internship in Hamburg in Northern Germany. Placements are available depending on your language skills and your background in the field you are interested in. Contact us for details!
