Ana Discovers the Art of Making Paella from Spain

For my blog post, I decided to choose something that I am very passionate aboutfood! One of the things I am most excited about going into my trip is the opportunity to try many new things, especially foods. I cannot wait to experience what a traditional meal is like in Spain. I thought that this project would help me research some of the staple foods in Spain, and help me gain a better understanding of the types of food I will be eating this summer. I have always loved to cook and eat, and one of my favourite foods is paella. I have eaten it many times but have never attempted to make it before. Although going into this cooking project I knew it would be a challenge, I decided to put myself to the test and see what I could do!

In choosing my recipe, I tried to find as authentic of a recipe as possible. I finally decided on one from a website called "The Spanish Table," whose recipe looked simple and delicious. Before cooking, I decided to do some research to find out the origins of the dish itself. In my findings, I discovered that paella originated in Valencia, Spain. I learned that it began as a simple food originally made by farmers. The recipe was adapted to whatever ingredients may have been around. I also learned that traditionally, it is eaten straight from the pan with a wooden spoon. Although cooking it was out of my comfort zone, I greatly enjoyed cooking it and eating it with my family. It was so much fun to explore cooking foods that I am unfamiliar with the preparation of, and successfully prepare them myself! After this project, I am even more excited to travel to Spain and fully immerse myself in the culture of the country.
